Location: Think down! From the entrance to the city keep heading down hill and eventually you'll find it.
Place: Church of St.Francis
This church is beautifully decorated, with three sections to explore. On the first level,
there are frescos covering the walls depicting the life of St.Francis, and at the end you
can go down a floor to the part of the church that is still used today. Below that there's
also a small museum of St.Francis' belongings and his remains are buried in the church as well.
It's worth checking out just for the art, but also interesting to some people because of the
history and religious sicnificance of it.
Location: Just inside Assisi after you take an escalator from the parking lot.
Place: St.Catharine's church.
This church is very big, and very empty. The church on it's own is very plain compared to most.
The walls of the church used to be white washed because the church was used to house sick people,
so the frescos on the walls were destroyed, so there's really not much decoration compared to
most churches. However, it does have a very big dead Jesus, and below the church there's a small
collection of St. Catharine's belongings, so if you're into that you might want to check it out.
Over all it's not a very interesting place to see, but if you're going to see the church of St.Francis
it might be worth checking it out just because of the relationship between the two.
Warning: There's a person that tells you to be quiet about every minute. No talking in the church!
Location: The road between churches of St.Catharine and St.Francis.
Picture: Three monks walking towards us.
In Assisi there are real monks that live there. They come from all over the world to
this place, and you can find them anywhere. I wonder what they think of us taking
pictures of them... Most of them are friendly, but some of them don't like it when you
talk to them.
Location: View point near St.Catharines church.
Picture: View of the countryside.
You can get a really wonderful view of the countryside from the upper part of Assisi,
it's a great place to take picture (eg. this one), and if you climb to the fort at the
top of the city, you can get an even better view. Not worth the walk for me, but it's
worth doing if you're feeling particularly motivated that day!
