The Florida Keys are 1700 tiny islands beginning on the southern tip of Florida and ejecting south dividing the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. The islands vary in size, some barely wide enough to fit to the two lanes of cars while others support towns and cities. The Keys are very often hit by tropical storms and hurricanes so be careful what time of year you plan to visit! While the Florida Keys are not the grandest of tourist sites they are definitely worth visiting for the beauty of them! As you drive south from island to island you can admire the beautiful tropical waters, fauna and animals. Most towns are not rich towns, although with the keys becoming a more appealing destination, larger and fancier homes are beginning to become a more common site on some islands. The last of the islands is home to the most well known town Key West. Famous for its night life and Key Lime Pie, Key West is also home to many historical sites and homes. While staying in Key West it is impossible to miss the rowdy clubs and as you walk the main street the bars and restaurants are alive with singers and filled with partying locals and tourists. One famous club, "Sloppy Joe's Bar" was supposedly a favorite place to reside for Ernest Hemingway.
A cool place to visit in Key West is the graveyard. As you fight off the bugs you make your way through row upon row of graves. The most comical of the tomb stones in the graveyard reads "I told you I was sick". There is also a winter white house where presidents Harry Truman, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, JF Kennedy and Jimmy Carter used as a winter home or as a getaway home for recovery or safety. The most southern point of North America is also in Key West. A large monument marks the southernmost point, and you can stand and look out to see nothing but ocean in all directions. Very nearby to this point is the still active Key West Naval Air Station. While traveling through the keys you must make sure to go snorkeling or take a glass boat tour. You can watch a colorful array of fish, turtles and tons of other wild life. Its beauty is breathtaking. If you want some historical history of the culture of Florida as well as a lively city and beautiful scenery you won't want to miss the beauty that is the Florida Keys.
