An emoticon (emotion + icon) is a combination of symbols used to express or display a facial expression or emotion (happy, sad, angry, etc.). Although its history can date back to Morse code (certain codes meant things like "love and kisses"), it wasn't until around 1982 that the first ASCII emoticons, :-) and :-(, were proposed to express emotion over a text email. People on the web caught on, and within a few years, many Internet forums and web-chat messenger companies incorporated graphical smilies, up to the ones we know of of today.

Here is a vast list of the different kinds of emoticons used worldwide, mostly demostrating the uses of ASCII characters, as well as Japanese characters, to create many facial expressions and emotions. Enjoy! ^_^

> The Dancing Banana

Dancing Banana This dancing banana is an infamous animated emoticon, portraying a live banana doing a pelvic-thrust dance. Used in many forums, it gained such popularity that people began to create new variations to it, such as dancing broccoli, pickle, video game characters, etc.

It wasn't until the release of its flash animation in 2000 that the Dancing Banana became a well-known internet phenomenon. The animation consisted of the dancing banana in a loop while having the background music playing "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" over and over again, focusing on its repetitive chorus. It grew to such a point that it was being referenced in pop culture, such as in the shows Family Guy and American Idol, and many video games like The World of Warcraft. The original can be viewed here, and many other different variations can be found online.
