Welcome...
...to the World of Manipulation! This is where you can read through an in-depth tutorial explaining in detail how to manipulate photos, and explore our gallery. Every thumbnail in our gallery will take you to a page with the image on its own when clicked, which will also provide the original photos used to create the composition. Please take a look around, we hope you enjoy the site!
What is photo manipulation?
Photo manipulation is basically the process of applying image editing techniques to an image to create a non-realistic or impossible image, in other words an illusion. You can also manipulate photos to simply change the way something looks or remove an object or person. For example, some modeling pictures are manipulated to make the model seem skinnier or to remove unwanted objects. There are many different software programs which you can use to manipulate photos (they are shown below).
What software programs can you use for photo manipulation?
- Adobe Photoshop
- GIMP
- Paint.NET
- Google Picasa - More for basic editing
- Corel Paint Shop Pro
- Photo Explosion
- Serif PhotoPlus
- ACDSee Photo Editor
- Many, many others
How did photo manipulation come to be?
The first cases of photo manipulation occurred around the 1860s, this was when they used a series of techniques not involving computers. They manipulated the photos with paint, double-exposure, piercing photos or negatives together in a darkroom, scratching Polaroids, or retouching with ink.
What is the most common software used for photo manipulation?
While I'm not sure if it's the most common, the most powerful software used is Adobe Photoshop, which is the photo manipulation program that we used to manipulate our photos. Although Photoshop is most commonly used, you also have to pay for the software unlike with Paint.NET or GIMP. You can buy Photoshop from stores or online for a large sum of cash, or download the free trial version, but we recommend (if you can't afford Photoshop) that you use Paint.NET. GIMP is probably the most powerful free program, but you'll go insane trying to learn it if you're new to photo manipulation. Paint.NET is a simple, yet effective tool for drawing, compositing, blending, and editing images, and best of all...it's free.
