RAMPAC Meeting

Mt. Doug School Library

Wednesday, October 17, 2007, 7 p.m.

 

In attendance: John Fawcett, Rob House, Daryl Cowden, Lindy England, Joy Carroll, Bill Hampton, Debbie Ibaraki, Catherine Lee, Iona Sadlemyer, Bev Perry Hallam, Maureen Grady, Karen Jensen

 

1. Call to Order: Daryl Cowden called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and introductions were made.

 

2. Leadership: Catherine Lee shared that approximately 80 students are involved in Leadership. They had a Corn Roast, coordinated Photo Day, and a Scavenger Hunt. Community Events included Run for the Cure/Marathon/ and Light the Night. Talent Show Auditions are taking place with the theme "Space". Starting decorations soon. Rambucks should be opening at the end of October.

 

3. Admin/School Report:

  • Interim Reports. Families should have received a report for each class with a letter attached.
  • Seismic Upgrade: Still "hoarding" west wall. Girls' change rooms and full gym available. Dance class reopened this week. First assembly Tuesday morning. First Aid Room completed. Need wheelchair access ASAP. Exterior anchors at end of wings will be next focus. Had a fire drill as there are new exits. Very good to Excellent response.
  • Lock down drill planned for November 6 at 11 am. Parents are instructed not to come to the school, but it's okay for you to call/talk to your kids. Earthquake, Fire and Lockdown drills/practices will take place annually.
  • Scholarship results: 9 or 10 top spots in the District were Mt. Doug students. 42 Provincial scholarships. Dana Bailey is scholarship teacher. There have been changes to the Career Centre staff and counselor changes.
  • ProD Day, September 24. Half of staff went to Camp Pringle Sunday pm and Monday am re: future of Mt. Doug. Assessment strategies also featured.
  • Devon Matthews, is a Grade 10 student on School Planning Council.
  • At end of August, signed an agreement with Marioka School in Japan to be a sister school. Now, 2 sister schools with Avignon. Marioka is hosting an International forum re: a global education question. John Fawcett will be visiting Japan for 1 week.

 

4. Treasurer's Report Lindy England

Budget proposal was circulated and discussed. Late request for the Musical was discussed. Proposed that $2000 from PST refund and other funds could be utilized to cover the request partially. The Musical has booked Oak Bay School at a cost.

Need to check on commitment to Technology budget for future ($5000 per year until what year).

MOTION: To accept the budget as presented with inclusion of $5000 for Technology and monies for dance mirrors, Emergency Preparedness, Student Scholarships, Photocopy and PAC miscellaneous expenses. Lindy England/Bill Hampton. CARRIED

 

5. Parent Rep for Vacant Position:

Margaret has agreed to take on the Emergency Preparedness Position.

Communications Coordinator is other vacant position.

 

6. Other Business:

Traffic Calming: Concerns continue about pick up and drop off areas. John Fawcett has approached Larry Crawford of Saanich. Students are to park behind the gym. Teachers in the side lot off Laval. Signage has been ordered. Can request help with cross-walk in a collective letter from the School Administrators and RAMPAC, such as a push button that activated a flashing upright light, or a flashing amber streetlight that changes to red. Both would be "traffic calming measures". John will draft letter and get PAC input.

 

7. Announcements:

as per agenda:

2 useful websites available at no charge are: www.learnnowbc.gov.bc.ca and www.studybuzz.com. Can help students study for each unit of the BC curriculum. Get your students to check it out.

Next meeting will include a conversation regarding the future of Mt. Doug.

MOTION: That $50 - $75 be supplied for a fruit tray, cookies and coffee for the next meeting, November 21. Deb Ibaraki/Joy Carroll. CARRIED
